A native of Saint John N.B., Maria received her B.A. degree from St. Thomas University in 1977 and her LL.B degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1980. She was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1981 and the New Brunswick Bar in 1989. Maria received an appointment as Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 2004. She practises with the law firm of Brenton Kean.
Maria has extensive trial experience and administrative law experience. She has appeared before the Courts at all levels in Atlantic Canada, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada, and numerous administrative tribunals. Her practice has focused on litigation, including family law, aboriginal law and some criminal law. Maria was an adjudicator under the Indian Residential School Settlement agreement.
